Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric or fly amanita, is a basidiomycete of the genus Amanita. It is a poisonous mushroom that is native throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The iconic red-capped, white-dotted toadstool represents the archetypal idea of a mushroom in most people’s minds, yet few are aware of its therapeutic potential as a psychoactive fungus. It is hallucinogenic and was once used as a fly poison.
